[Commonplace book], [late 17th century].

Manuscript on paper, in a single secretary hand, of several dozen religious, philosophical, and moral verses; meditations upon various religious subjects; as well as collections of "wise saws," "sayings of heathens improved," and "adages or proverbial speeches." The poems in the volume are primarily by Katherine Philips and Abraham Cowley; the collection also includes Christ Passion, "Taken out of a Greek Ode, written by Mr. Masters of new Colledge in Oxford"; and numerous short epigrammatic verses on such subjects as On God & Gold; On God's Bounty; On Ravens and Lillies; and On Our Sinnes. The manuscript also contains meditations on such subjects as A Spiritual Medicine; Anger; and Poverty; as well as charts labeled "Tray weight," "How to finde the tyme of the Moones Southing & the tyme of the Tides any day," and "Wine vessels with their Contents are thus."
